May 1, 2024 National Law Day - What Democracy Means To Me

Democracy means to me inclusion. Inclusion of race, age, gender, and socioeconomic difference.

Democracy means to me representation of all Americans.

Democracy means to me equality and protection under the law.

Democracy means to me equal positions and equal pay.

Democracy means to me freedom of speech to respectively protest any injustice and respectively declare my own beliefs.

Democracy means to me the freedom to vote and invest in the future of our country.

Democracy means to me world peace. Stop funding genocide!

Democracy means to me freedom of choice to live my life how I see fit.

Democracy means to me loving and marrying freely. I am proudly in an interracial marriage.

Democracy means to me female empowerment to decide what is best for my body.

Democracy means to me a code of standards. A moral compass. It is a standard of how I conduct myself. It is a standard of how I treat people who differ from me in culture, gender, ideology, and spirit. But above all, it is a code for how I respect the law and everything it stands for even if I don’t always agree with it.

Democracy matters because without it where would our country be without human decency?

I do not take democracy for granted especially as the granddaughter of indigenous Mexican & Italian immigrants as well as a woman in 2024.
